Episode Summary
The episode opens with Sam, Trevor, Flower, Thorfinn, Pete, and Isaac in the kitchen. Jay comes in with good news that the mayor wants to host a fundraising event at the restaurant to kick off his reelection campaign. Trevor said he thought the restaurant was still closed after a stripper fell through the roof. Isaac responds that his name is Chris, the hot dinosaur loving stripper, and that he is no longer at Woodstone and is “lost to the winds.” Sam clarifies that the roof repairs are finished, but she thought there was a holdup with the inspections. Jay explained that while they can’t open until the inspections are finished, they’re still able to host private events. Jay is hoping that if the event goes well, the mayor can pull some strings to get the permits for the restaurant, and they can reopen. Isaac then interjects saying that he thought he saw Chris on the horizon, but it was just a paper bag.
At the restaurant, Jay is helping his staff prepare for the event and he pulls Gabe aside to talk about his marijuana usage. He advises that tonight is very important for the restaurant, and everything needs to go well in order for the restaurant to open. During this conversation, Gabe is noticeably high, and asks where his spatula is. Jay tells him that he’s holding it. Hetty walks in, asking Pete and Flower, who are watching the conversation unfold, what’s going on. Pete tells her that Jay is having a much needed conversation about Gabe’s drug usage. Jay reiterates that he knows that this day is very important to stoners, as it is April 20th, also known as 420. Jay tells Gabe that he dabbles with marijuana, but there’s a time and place, and he needs this event to go well, and asks Gabe to not do any drugs, at least for the night. Gabe agrees, and once again asks if Jay has seen his spatula. Pete says that he should keep an eye on Gabe to make sure he stays clean for the day, and Flower says that he’s being totally unreasonable. 420 is like Christmas for stoners and you don’t ask anybody not to do drugs on Christmas.
At the mansion, Sam and Jay welcome the mayor, Tad, to Woodstone as Alberta, Isaac, and Hetty watch. Tad thanks Sam and Jay for everything they do for the local economy with the hotel and the restaurant, and Hetty makes a remark about the business they send to the local mortuary, and Isaac laughs that there have been a lot of deaths. Tad reveals that he has actually been to Woodstone years ago, and that someone very special to him lost their life. It was prom night in 1987. The scene then cuts to the flashback of Stephanie and Tad in the car right before the chainsaw murderer killed Stephanie. Tad then explains that he tried to fend off the killer but was knocked unconscious, and his girlfriend Stephanie didn’t make it. Sam then tries to relate to Tad with her sad prom story when she thought she was going to prom with who she thought was her online French penpal, when Hetty reminds Sam that his prom date was murdered in front of him. She then drops the story, and takes Tad to see the restaurant. Alberta tosses the idea that they should wake Stephanie up to see Tad. Hetty rebuttals that she’s so mean and scary, and Isaac says that this could be their chance to get on their good side. Isaac and Hetty say that they want her to like them, and they don’t know why.
In Gabe’s car, Gabe has hotboxed himself inside, along with Pete, trying to bust him. After Gabe says he’s so baked, Pete responds saying that he’s so busted. He then makes a comment of the smell and realizes his mouth is dry. He then starts to vibe to the music, and asks Gabe if he remembers bugles. He realizes that Gabe cannot see or hear him, and then asks again if he remembers bugles.
At the restaurant, they’re setting up for Tad’s fundraising event. Sam reads his campaign slogan, “Tad doesn’t run from problems”, and Tad explains that while he may not have been able to fend off Stephanie‘s attacker, he gave it his best effort, and promises that that is what he will do for the people of the town. Thor and Trevor hype up his speech, and Tad adds that he wanted to host his re-electoral campaign at Woodstone, as it means a lot to him. Stephanie then storms in ordering Sam to tell him to leave. Tad then gets a phone call and excuses himself out. Stephanie comments that he’s so old and that he looks like a math teacher. Sam asks what’s going on, Isaac explains that they thought she would be happy to learn of Tad’s presence, but they were grossly mistaken. Sam asks what Stephanie’s issue with Tad is, and she responds that her issue is that she hates him. She notices the banner and asks what it means. Sam says that it refers to how he stood up for her and tried to save her life. Stephanie drops a piece of information that it’s a total lie. Sam asks what she means by that, and Stephanie explains that Tad didn’t try to save her, and that the only person he cared about saving was himself. She explains that he pushed her out of the way and in the killer’s sight to run away. The ghosts were in awe, saying that the story was so sad. Alberta comes to Stephanie’s defence, telling Sam she needs to expose Tad. Sam agrees that the story is awful, but they need to host the fundraiser to get the permits for the restaurant to reopen.
In the kitchen at the mansion, Pete is bent over the table smelling freshly baked bread when Flower walks in. He makes a comparison to Flower and the main ingredient of bread, flour. Flower says that’s a cool observation and asks what else he’s been up to today. Pete explains that he was in Gabe’s car to spy on him, he caught him smoking weed, and then he had the desire to smell bread an hour ago. Flower tells Pete that she thinks he’s high. Pete says ghosts can’t get high, but Flower explains that she didn’t think it was possible, but it makes sense because of ghosts ability to smell things, and that Pete was inside an enclosed area with a lot of smoke, and now he’s high. Pete starts to freak out, as for his entire existence, he never once did any kind of drug. Flower says that this is groovy, and Pete explains that he’s not the kind of guy who smokes grass, he’s the kind of guy who cuts grass in his wife’s gardening hat drinking a lemonade. Flower tells him to chill out and that there’s nothing wrong with weed, especially now that he’s a ghost. Nobody can arrest him or fire him. Flower tells him that it’s 420 and he’s dead, he can live a little.
Sam explains the situation to Jay in the living room, as Stephanie, Isaac, and Thorfinn watch. Isaac reminds Sam that she doesn’t want to upset a powerful figure, referring to Stephanie. Sam says that she thinks they need to do the right thing. Jay says that while Tad did a terrible thing, calling him out and sabotaging their restaurant isn’t going to change what happened. He reminds Sam that they’re constantly doing things for the ghosts, and that it’s okay to choose themselves for once and that Stephanie is not even one of the main eight ghosts. Jay apologizes to the ghosts, reiterating that this is not a decision on Sam, it’s on him, and that they’re going through with the fundraiser for the mayor and get their permits. Sam agrees after looking around at the ghosts, causing Stephanie to storm out saying this is worse than the time Sandra K. beat her high score in Dig Dug. Thor asks what Dig Dug is, and Sam repeats the question for Jay to answer. Jay starts explaining as Thor gets bored and leaves, leaving Jay talking to himself in the living room.
In the TV room, Hetty and Alberta sit on the couch as Hetty explains that Flower said Pete got high while attempting to narc on Gabe. Alberta questions what Hetty is saying, saying that this doesn’t seem like something Pete would do. Hetty agrees, but also points out how he’s done a lot of things he wouldn’t have previously done, such as punching Thor in the face, discovering he was secretly in the mafia, and he’s out roaming and dating around. Alberta thinks and says that when said like that, it’s almost like Pete is a bit of a bad boy, and starts to find herself attracted to him.
At the restaurant, the mayor’s fundraiser is going on, as Tad is giving his speech. He ends by saying that the city’s budget crisis is a metaphorical chainsaw killer, and he reiterates, very loudly, that he will not run from it. Stephanie exclaims that he ran away like a little bitch. Sam contemplates speaking up, but Jay tells her to remember the permits, although he also agrees that it’s bad. Trevor urges Sam to speak up, telling her that Stephanie is someone’s daughter and that her feelings matter. Tad finishes up his speech saying that while he wasn’t able to save Stephanie, he will save commuters over 15 minutes round trip to Albany when they add a carpool lane. The room is filled with applause.
In the living room at the house, Nancy walks in asking why there’s a bunch of cars at the restaurant when it’s closed. Isaac explains that Sam and Jay are hosting a fundraiser for the mayor who turns out to be Stephanie‘s old prom date. Isaac explained that they woke Stephanie up thinking she would be happy to see him, when in reality, she hates him because of his actions the night she died. Thor then explains that he ran away leaving her to die, unlike Thor who famously protected Alberta’s backside from ricochet. Nancy tells them that Tad didn’t run away, and that he did try to save her. Nancy explains that she was there that night watching the two teens, when the chainsaw killer came out and he was heading straight for Stephanie. She then explains further that Tad went to attack the killer, but the killer knocked him out with the butt of the chainsaw. Isaac realizes that Stephanie lied and made the whole story up.
Back at the restaurant, Tad speaks more about what he will do for the city. Stephanie scoffs at Sam, saying she can’t believe Sam is letting him exploit her death. Sam tells Jay that she thinks they have to say something. Jay agrees, saying that this guy, referring to Tad, sucks, and to take him down. Sam then says she has a question, even though there was no Q&A portion, she asks how he sleeps at night. Jay announces that Tad’s entire story is a lie. Isaac then walks in, trying to tell Sam that Stephanie lied, and that Tad didn’t run away, but is too late. Tad says he doesn’t know what they’re talking about, and Jay explains that he ran away and left Stephanie to die. Tad says that that is 100% false. Isaac then chimes in, telling Sam that Stephanie lied right as Sam was about to add to what Jay was saying. Upon learning this new information, Sam is shocked, and attempts to cover up what she and Jay just said by saying that they were testing Tad. Sam says that Tad didn’t run away from the false accusation, and that that’s that kind of leadership this town needs. Trevor and Hetty scold Stephanie, asking why she would lie. Stephanie admits that Tad didn’t run away, but she still hates him. Isaac asks what did Tad do, and Stephanie storms off saying she doesn’t want to talk about it.
In the lounge, Pete is listening to jazz while high. Alberta then walks by, hearing the music playing, and tells Pete she didn’t know he was a jazz fan. Pete says that he’s been a fan since his oboe days. Alberta then sits down next to him on the couch, asking what he likes about the music genre. Pete goes on to explain that he likes that there are no rules, it’s controlled chaos, or maybe he’s just attracted to the danger. Alberta says she might be, as well, referring to Pete.
In the living room, Sam and Jay storm in, angry with Stephanie for lying to them and making them make fools out of themselves. Jay says that he can’t believe that she lied to them, and Hetty adds that dishonesty is basically one of her defining characteristics. Sam asks why Stephanie has a grudge against Tad if he defended her when she died. Stephanie confesses that Tad didn’t run away, but, in her eyes, he did something worse. She explains that a week after she died, there was a vigil for her. Stephanie explains that everyone was there, and Tad was there standing hand in hand with her best friend/lab partner, Stephanie Del Vecchio. The scene then cuts to a flashback outside the front door of Woodstone with Stephanie watching the vigil as Pete and Thor stand in the background. Tad is seen with his arm around Melanie. Stephanie feels betrayed and angry as she yells at Tad and Melanie. Tad then kisses Melanie on the temple, causing Stephanie to gasp. Pete then chimes in, introducing himself, and saying that he’s happy to give the new ghost orientation whenever. Stephanie then goes, “Ew” and says she hates his knees. Pete says that it’s probably the grief talking. The flashback ends, and Sam says that Stephanie tried to get them to destroy his career just because he hurt her feelings. Stephanie explains that he moved on right away, and he was the love of her life, and apparently she meant nothing to him.
In the next scene, Pete sits down on the couch next to Thor upstairs and sighs. Thor asks if he’s okay. Pete explains that he and Alberta just had a moment. At the same time, in a separate room, Alberta is telling Hetty about what happened as well. Alberta tells Hetty that she and Pete were staring into each other’s eyes, and she started to lean in. Pete repeats this for Thor, and Thor asks what happens next. Pete said that her lips puckered. Hetty grabs Alberta’s asking if that’s when they kissed. Alberta says that’s not exactly what happened. There’s a flashback to that moment, as Alberta leans in, Pete suddenly facepalms her. Alberta is shocked, Pete, palm still on Alberta’s face, explains what he thinks happened, as Alberta reminds him that his palm is still on her face. He quickly removes his palm, and Alberta leaves the room. Pete explains to Thor that he’s had a crush on Alberta for a long time, but he’s exclusive with Donna, and he’s not a cheater.
In the foyer, Sam and Jay, along with Flower, Isaac, and Trevor, talk about what happened at the restaurant. Jay says that now it’s going to take months to get the new permits. Trevor defends Sam and Jay, saying that they did a great thing by pulling a hero move for Stephanie. Isaac sarcastically comments on how were they supposed to know she was lying, given every single interaction with her. Tad then walks in to pick up his campaign buttons. Jay says that they’re happy to leave them out for the guests. Tad asks why, and then adds so they can change his name to “Bad”. Sam explains that the truth is that they did that because they were high because it’s 4/20. Stephanie then walks in, saying that she thought Tad left, calling him a jerkwad. Jay adds that he hopes that what went down doesn’t interfere with the permits, and Tad says that he’s not helping them out with anything. A woman then walks in, asking if Tad is ready to leave. Stephanie recognizes her as her former best friend, Melanie. Tad introduces Melanie to Sam and Jay. Stephanie then scoffs, commenting that Melanie is now old and looks like her mom. Stephanie introduces herself as Tad’s wife. Sam then stumbles over her words, and asks how long they’ve been married. Tad tells Melanie that Sam and Jay are high, and that’s why they’re acting like that. Melanie says that they’ve been married for 30 years in June, and Tad adds that they met in high school. Sam asks if Melanie knew Stephanie, then. Melanie says that Stephanie was her best friend, and Tad says that Stephanie is the thing that brought them together. Stephanie was special to both of them, and they were both so grief stricken that they found comfort in each other’s arms. Stephanie nonchalantly adds that that’s kind of nice. Tad mentions that they named their daughter Stephanie. Stephanie starts to show more emotion, saying that the gesture was very sweet. Sam adds that it’s good that something nice came out of a tragedy, and Jay apologizes again. Tad sighs and thinks, as he tells Sam and Jay that they seem like nice people. He says that he’ll give the permit office a call and see what he can do for them. Sam and Jay thank him, and Tad reminds them that they can split the gummies in half next time. Isaac asks what gummies are, and Trevor explains that it’s basically edible weed. Flower realizes that the munchies are now the pot and says that she died too soon.
In the final scene, Hetty, Stephanie, Flower, and Trevor are in Gabe’s car as he smokes more pot. The ghosts present exhibit different types of people when they get high. Hetty starts to get very existential, saying that they’re all dead, yet everyone keeps living. Stephanie seems dazed, and Flower says that she doesn’t feel anything. Trevor gets anxious, saying he thinks he’s having a heart attack. Hetty comments on a tree and now it’s huge. Trevor asks if everybody in the car hates him. Hetty and Stephanie comment that Jenkins is random, and Flower says that everybody is a lightweight. Roll Away by The Grateful Dead plays as the episode ends.
