Episode Summary
In a flashback from 1982, we see an alive Pete working at his job as a travel agent, helping a newly wed couple plan their honeymoon. As he’s telling the couple about the resort and giving them travel advice, one of Pete’s coworkers, Vinnie, walks in to grab some traveler’s checks. He then sends the couple off with their plane tickets and asks them to send him a postcard before making a reference to Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’.
The next scene cuts to Jay, Sam, Pete and Sasappis in the kitchen. Pete tells Sam to tell Jay to add a cup of Dr Pepper to a sauce on the stove. Thorfinn then walks in, asking what everyone is doing, and Sam explains that Jay is making Pete’s legendary arrabiata sauce. Jay tries the sauce, calling it amazing and wishing he could put it on the menu at Mahesh. Sam asks why can’t he, and suggests he makes an Italian-Indian fusion dish. Jay sees her version, and then comes up with the idea to have a dish to honor each ghost. Pete is hesitant to let Jay add his sauce to the menu, as the recipe is actually an old family recipe of his ex-wife, Carol’s. When they got married, she made him promise to never share it with anyone. Sasappis then reminds Pete that she didn’t keep all of her wedding day promises, referring to her having an affair with Pete’s best friend Jerry. Pete then gives Jay the okay to use his sauce on the menu.
In the library, Hetty and Trevor discuss the next steps of their new alliance which they call the “Power Friends”. They team up to manipulate others for their mutual benefit. Hetty’s first idea for them is to get Flower to move out of Hetty’s room. The scene then cuts to Flower and Hetty laying in bed while Flower tells Hetty a story from Woodstock. Trevor says that while he gets Hetty not wanting to room with Flower, this seems more like a “her” thing than a “them” thing. Isaac and Alberta then walk in the room, wanting to know what’s going on. They’re worried that Hetty and Trevor are hooking up again, and they cannot handle the drama. Hetty and Trevor assure them both that they’re not back together, and they’re just talking as friends.
At Mahesh, Pete’s arrabiata sauce is a hit, with nearly every table ordering it. Pete’s saying that he’s glad that he can help Sam and Jay and that he knows how important the restaurant is to them, when Carol walks in, asking if Pete shared her family’s recipe with Jay. Pete confirms that he did share the sauce recipe when a guest gets the attention of the waiter, asking to speak with the chef. Pete says he looks familiar, Carol tells him that it’s her cousin Anthony, who Pete has not seen since Anthony was 10. Anthony and Jay talk about the sauce, and Anthony recognizes it as a family recipe and accuses Jay of stealing it. Jay says that he didn’t steal the sauce, he’s never been to his restaurant, and says he can leave a review on yelp. Pete asks what’s going on, and Carol tells him that Anthony is in the Mafia.
Back at the house, Pete, Carol, Alberta, Sasappis, and Isaac gather while Sam breaks the news to Jay that the guy he told to get lost is high up in the local Mafia, and the recipe Pete shared is actually an old family recipe of Carol’s. Carol warns that if Jay doesn’t get the sauce off the menu, he’s going to be sleeping with the fishes. Jay says he’ll take the sauce off the menu and that nothing goes right with this ghost stuff before walking out of the room. Pete questions how Anthony got mixed up with the mob, Carol informs him that he was born into it, and that he’s head of the Randuzzo crime family. Pete says that Randuzzo is her family, and that they weren’t in the mob, but ran a travel agency, which he worked out. Carol reveals that the travel agency was a front and that’s how they cleaned the money. The scene then cuts back to a flashback of Pete working at the travel agency where he’s getting traveler’s checks for Vinnie. A man named Carmine then walks out asking Vinnie if “the thing is good”. Pete asks what thing, then asks if they’re planning a surprise party for him, to which they say they can’t get anything past him. Carmine then takes the money from Vinnie in the back to count and Pete offers to help. Carmine reminds him that he doesn’t go in the back. Back in the present day, Pete questions if anything he did was real, as he did book trips for people. Carol tells him that it was a functioning travel agency, but Pete was the only one doing any travel agent work. Carol had assumed that Pete found out but never wanted to talk about it. She had no idea that Pete didn’t know about any of this until now. Pete walks out of the room, upset that his life’s work is seemingly a joke, and that he was just the useful idiot.
Upstairs in Hetty and Flower’s room, Flower is telling Hetty another Woodstock story as Hetty is trying to sleep. Hetty sits up and tells Flower she has been thinking about something, the Flower should move in with Thor in his room, as it seems that their relationship is being stunted by Flower rooming with Hetty. Flower says that Thor has mentioned that he wants them to room together, but she thinks it’s a big step and she’s not sure if she’s ready for that. Hetty urges Flower to reconsider, saying that a relationship must move forward, or it dies. Flower reconsiders, and agrees to move in with Thor.
At the restaurant, Jay says that he went to Anthony’s restaurant, told him he was going to take the dish off the menu, and profusely apologized. Carol reassures Sam that if they wanted him dead, they would’ve done it by now. Anthony then walks in with two other guys, and eagerly shakes Jay’s hand. He came back because he said that he couldn’t wrap his head around how Jay came up with the sauce, because of the coincidence that his cousin Carol died at the property. Sam assures them that they would never intentionally steal a recipe, and that they knew Carol. She said that they were very sad about the donut hole related incident. Jay says that he just came up with the same sauce, and that people come up with the same great idea all the time, and that he didn’t steal the sauce. Anthony asks if he’s sure about that, making Jay nervously stumble over his words. Anthony then starts laughing, saying he’s just messing with them. He then requests a table, and Sam asks if it’s just the three of him, to which Anthony responds that they’re expecting friends and need a table for ten. Jay says that they can do that, but it’s going to be a wait. Anthony doesn’t do waits and wants to sit down now. He then points to a large table occupied by a birthday dinner party, and asks about that table. Jay begins to say that the table is taken before Sam chimes in that they’ll move them.
In the house upstairs in Thor and Trevor’s room, Trevor is watching a house hunting show when Thor and Flower walk in together. Thor announces that Flower is moving into their room. Trevor then freaks out and says that they don’t have room for three people, to which Flower says that in the summer of ‘66, she lived with five other roommates in a Volkswagen Bug. Trevor tells them that they can’t make the decision on their own, as it’s also Trevor’s room. Flower says to take a vote, which Thor and Flower vote that she moves in, leaving Trevor outnumbered. Trevor questions why they’re doing this now, and Flower says that she can’t say who gave her the idea because she promised Hetty she wouldn’t tell.
Downstairs in the foyer, Jay and Sam talk about the mobsters in the restaurant, saying they’re racking up a huge bill and just saying to put everything on their tab, which he doesn’t think they’ll pay. Sasappis then walks in saying that they finally left, but not before taking art off their wall and saying to put it on their tab. Sam was glad that they made it through the night, before Sasappis mentioned that he heard them say that they’re going to come back again tomorrow night. Carol then says that she was afraid of this happening, and that they’re going to bleed Sam and Jay dry to where they’re forced to take a loan from them. They’ll then own the restaurant and squeeze every dollar out of it until there’s nothing left, and then burn it down for the insurance money.
In the kitchen, Sam and Jay try to come up with a way to get out of the mess, and ask if there’s any way out. Carol says she does know a way, but she can’t do it, she can’t go against the family. Pete, fed up, tells Carol that he’s her family too, and that she lied to him his entire adult life about their marriage and his job. He stands up for Sam and Jay saying that they’re his family too, and that he got them into this mess and he needs her help to get them out. Carol agrees and says that while it won’t make up for everything, she owes this to Pete. Carol reveals that she kept the books for all of the family businesses, which were money laundering fronts. She tells Sam she’ll give her directions and the code for a storage unit that all of the evidence is in.
Trevor, Hetty, Flower, Thor, Isaac, and Alberta all gather in the living room. Trevor asks Hetty if she told Flower to move into his and Thor’s room. Hetty responds that all she said was that Flower and Thor deserved to be together. Trevor suggests that they move in with her instead, if she’s so invested in their relationship. Hetty points out that her room only has one bed, and three people can’t share one bed. Trevor responds that he’s not letting Thor and Flower room with him, and he won’t let Hetty get her own room as a result of the situation, so he says that he’s moving in with her. Isaac and Alberta gasp at this, as they believe that if Hetty and Trevor room together, it’s only a matter of time before they’re back together. Hetty agrees that Trevor’s solution is fair, and agrees before Alberta stands up and says no. Despite the objections, Trevor says that it’s happening unless anybody else has a better plan. Isaac then stands up and says that he will offer his room to Flower and Thor and he will move in with Alberta. While Alberta isn’t too keen on not getting her own room, it’s better than Hetty and Trevor sharing a room.
At the restaurant, Sam and Jay confront Anthony. They reveal that they have evidence of the Randuzzo family being involved in decades worth of money laundering, enough to put him away for a very long time. Sam and Jay tell Anthony that either they ruin him with the books, or that he could leave them alone, and that if anything happens to them, then the police will be notified. Anthony doesn’t admit anything, but agrees to leave them alone. After Anthony walks out, the group is happy that their business is safe. While Pete is happy for Sam and Jay, he’s still upset that his life’s work is seemingly a joke. Sam says that while she was at the storage unit, she found a box of postcards to Pete from his actual clients. Pete smiles at the hundreds of postcards in the box, as Jay reads one out to him. While the travel agency was a front, Pete did bring actual joy to people’s lives.
The next day, Hetty and Trevor talk about what it’s like now that they have their own room. Trevor can stay up all night watching reruns of MTV’s “Spring Break”, and Hetty is just glad she hasn’t heard a Grateful Dead story from Flower in days. They then both fist pump while saying, “Power friends.” Flower happens to be walking by and hear them. She asks what they’re up to, and while having a moment of lucidity, realizes what they did. In this moment, she explains that Hetty convinced her to move in with Thor which caused a staged fight between Hetty and Trevor, that would lead to the threat of them moving in together. Isaac and Alberta would do anything to prevent that from happening, including moving together, freeing up a room for Thor and Flower, ultimately leaving Hetty and Trevor with their own rooms. Flower says they would’ve gotten away with it, before going back to her normal dazed state and asks what they were talking about. Hetty responds that they were talking about Woodstock, which sends Flower into telling a Woodstock story she has said many times before.
